  • British marina initiative receives international recognition

bmf1The highly acclaimed British Gold Anchor Award scheme became a requirement for marinas across Flanders to adhere to on Friday 4 December. The scheme, founded and run by The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA), a group association of the British Marine Federation (BMF), has gathered international recognition over the past few years and is now to be adopted in full across Flanders under the instruction of the Minister of Public Works, Mss Hilde Crevits. Established to improve the standards of facilities available to all boat owners, the Gold Anchor Scheme works in a similar way to a hotel starring system, but with a fundamental difference, in that any number of anchors received represents a mark of quality. Mss Hilde Crevits said at the announcement in Belgium: “Our marinas are the real jewels of our coastline which embellish seaside resorts, bringing a special atmosphere for inhabitants and recreational visitors. They provide us with great touristic and recreational value. Our marinas are also extremely valuable for the economy of the whole coastal region. I therefore consider it of the utmost importance that marinas are easily accessible for both boat-owners and visitors, but also for young people who want to get to know this wonderful sport.” V V W Nieuwpoort marina has become the first marina to receive Gold Anchor status in the area. Through acquiring five gold anchors at today’s event, the top award, the marina will lead the way for others to follow. Sam Bourne, Chairman of TYHA attended the event and commented: “The Gold Anchor scheme is recognised both industry and consumer wide. By implementing the scheme, marinas will be able to promote their facilities under an established brand which potential customers will come to feel comfortable with. We are thrilled that the minister has incentivised our work, and are looking forward to working with further international sites as opportunities arise.” Outside UK membership, TYHA currently has 50 overseas members, and hopes to see that number grow as a result of today’s announcement.
