			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1476" title="Evinrude1" src="http://worldofpowerboats.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Evinrude1-300x194.jpg" alt="Evinrude1" width="300" height="194" />During the 1980s and 90s Neil Holmes was possibly Britain’s most successful offshore racing driver in the 2 and 4 litre classes collecting countless National and World championship. Possibly the most memorable for most of us was when accompanied by navigator Jim Cox, the partnership won the World Class 2 title when it was staged in Poole. What made it so remarkable was that Neil was driving ‘Fina Unleaded’ basically a 4 litre catamaran against the likes of Andreas Ugland in a large diesel powered Buzzi monohull. Neil was also one of the pioneers of racing in the UAE long before Victory joined the party. The Holmes family also owner South Godstone Marine in Surrey where Neil established an enviable reputation as being one of Britain’s most successful preparers of racing outboards. Jacqui Missen is now Neil’s other half and helps in their powerboat training school. During the 80s and 90s I raced with dirty, smelly, gas guzzling 2 stroke engines, and whilst they may have contributed to the state the environment is in now, they performed well enough to allow me to win many races.</p>
<p>But with Global warming dominating the headlines and D environmental pollution reaching an all time high, eco agencies have been issuing strict regulations on the use of internal combustion engines. In an attempt to address the problem of making powerboat racing more environment friendly, several manufactures produced normally aspirated and super charged 4 stroke outboard engines to replace the old 2 stroke engines which work on the principal of burning the lubrication oil off into the air. However, whilst the 4 stroke outboard engines have their merits in producing lower exhaust emissions, the engine’s lubrication oil kept in the sump means that at some point you will still need to find a way of disposing of a bucket full of dirty oil. One of the engine manufactures who are focussing on the environmental issues is BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products), and in 2003 they launched the Evinrude E-TEC range of outboard engines. This engine produces less than half the total reportable emissions of competitive technologies today.</p>
<p>Its fully stratified combustion system ensures no smoke, and three times lower carbon monoxide emissions. If you have run a performance 2 stroke engine in the past you will recall that with the engine running it was hard to hear yourself think, and that the amount of smoke billowing from the back would alert the fire brigade! Nowadays fuel charge never escapes the combustion chamber as it is burned and is turned into pure power as opposed to the unburnt fuel seeping out, laying a colourful but pollutant film across the water. The direct injection provides up to twice the fuel efficiency of competitive technologies at specific RPM ranges as its Engine Management Module (EMM) calculates the right amount of fuel needed and delivers precisely into the combustion chamber for fast response and low fuel consumption, and the sealed fuel system minimises evaporative emissions. The design of the Evinrude E-TEC has enabled its assembly head to only consist of two parts. <img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1477" title="Evinrude2" src="http://worldofpowerboats.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Evinrude2-300x223.jpg" alt="Evinrude2" width="300" height="223" /></p>
<p>There are no belts, no timing chains, camshafts or valves to change. This means no scheduled dealer maintenance until three years or 300 hours. Previous high powered 2 strokes would need a major engine rebuild after 40 hours of competitive use. The E-TEC is incredibly quiet due to the idle air bypass circuit, acoustically tuned air intakes and exhaust silencers, and acoustics foam lining, in fact it is so quiet you can forget that you even left it running! It was developed not only to be clean and quiet, but also to ensure an efficient and powerful ride. The E-TEC low weight design, superior torque and horsepower allows a superior power to weight ratio enabling the boat to get onto the plane quicker. In fact our training boat fitted with a 250 HO E-Tec reaches 0-60mph in approx 8 seconds. Keith Whittle from Powertech Marine in Hampshire runs a race circuit catamaran fitted with the same engine married onto a racing lower unit. This outfit has produced spectacular results and reliability, and Keith reports no lack of power, therefore, it’s only a matter of time before this unit becomes a serious contender for honours on the race circuit. However, like most new engines it needs to be marketed at a much higher level than it currently enjoys. The racing 250 HO E-Tech has been the result of a tremendous amount of hard-work and money by Keith and his team, but until other drivers ‘bite the bullet’ and go racing with the engine, it will take time for it to become an established unit. Having looked at how the Evinrude –E-TEC engine contributes positively to the environment, what about the benefits to the average power boater? Well for a start the servicing costs should be minimal, fuel consumption is significantly lower than from the old style 2 strokes, and the power to weight ratio is a major benefit Many emissions standards are met or exceeded with the Evinrude E-TEC outboard engine, including the European Union emissions standards that went into effect on 1st January 2007.</p>
<p>The first full line of outboard engines to receive the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) 3-star designation for Ultra Low Emissions was the Evinrude E-TEC range which was also the first outboard engine to receive the Clean Air Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection agency (EPA), in 2005. To suit a range of boating needs, the Evinrude E-TEC is available in a variety of sizes; from 40hp to 250hp, and uniquely &#8211; even a colour choice of white or blue.</p>

However, after arriving at my destination, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this Was also the headquarters of Bernico international. I had, on several occasions in the past promised to visit Bernico after being nagged by OCR racer Bob McCarthy, who has been a long time client of Nico Bertels, owner of Bernico International. If you think the name Bertels rings a bell, you’d be right as the Bertels family have been fl ying the Belgium fl ag in international watersports for many years. Danny was a multi-world F3 champion while Nico himself was a top ski-racer until he damaged a knee in a soccer match and wrecked the other knee in a ski-race accident. Nico lost his father in a tragic ski-race accident when Nico was just 14. At the time, Ber tels Senior owned a chicken processing plant in Antwerp and all the family had a passion for ski-racing. Nico was an up and coming star on the circuit and after the death of his father he continued to participate in as many events as possible. However, money was short and at the end of the 1989 season <img class="alignright size-full wp-image-764" title="bernico2" src="http://wop.wey2creative1.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/bernico2.JPG" alt="bernico2" width="182" height="268" />Nico was offered two new engines for the following year, but he could not persuade anyone to provide him with a boat. He decided to build one for himself and, in a small garage alongside the chicken processing plant, boat number one began to take shape. As it was nearing completion a Belgium skiracer visited the garage, saw the boat and said he wanted to buy it. Nico pointed out that he was building the boat for himself, but the guy made an offer ‘too good to refuse’ and Nico set about building an identical boat for his own use. The same thing happened when a Dutchman offered a good price for it, so it was boat number three that Nico eventually fitted out for himself complete with the two engines he was promised. In 1991 the rig was to secure Nico victory in the famous Diamond skirace on the Albert Canal in Viersel with cousin Peter Bertels driving the outfit. Today, Nico owns what most of us would regard as the ‘ultimate life package’; a 20 room hotel–pub–restaurant with marina, huge workshop and showroom all located on a site alongside a canal &#8211; what more could a man want? The name Bertels was already well established among the ski-racing fraternity, and now it was notorious for boat building. Nico Bertel’s was getting enquiries from every nation involved in the sport plus many offshore racers. Bernico have built upwards of 200 boats which include ski-boats, Class 3 offshore rigs and OCR outfits. The craft are renowned for their quality and I assumed a 21 foot ski-race boat in Nico’s workshop, fitted with a 600hp V8, was brand new, awaiting delivery to its owner until the guy polishing its mauve metallic gelcoat assured me the craft was at least two years old. I asked how Nico came to acquire such a desirable waterside complex, and it seems he can thank his mother-in-law for being in the right place at the right time. She was visiting friends in the area and decided to drop into the restaurant of Fevaca Hotel in Klein Willebroek which was owned by Felix Vancauwenber, <img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-766" title="bernico4" src="http://wop.wey2creative1.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/bernico4-169x300.jpg" alt="bernico4" width="169" height="300" />who had been Nico’s ski-race driver in 1994. As they were enjoying lunch, mother-in-law Bertels casually enquired what Felix planned to do with a new large vacant building in the yard opposite the hotel. He explained that he had built it with a view to fitting out and storing boats, but had rather lost enthusiasm in the project. Nico was looking for a large workshop to fit out his range of performance boats, and to cut a long story short, whilst Felix was keen to sell the large building, the buyer would have to purchase the hotel, restaurant, pub and marina and slipway too. It was certainly a very ambitious scheme, but one which was successfully completed, and today craft are still moulded in Antwerp and transported to Klein Willebroek for fitting out, although plans are currently underway to construct a new moulding shop on land behind the fitting out shop. As I mentioned earlier, I was in Belgium to try out the Donzi P1 boat that had been fitted out in Nico’s workshops, and it transpires he has designed, and is about to start building, the plug for a 41 foot P1 hull. I’ve seen the drawings and must confess the boat looks superb, plus I can guarantee the finish on the craft will be of the highest quality. Nico’s life is now complete &#8211; a happy family with wife Elke, who runs her own business as a manicurist, his 18 year old daughter Bo and 14 year old son Buby, plus a thriving business. Are there any regrets? “I live on the job and therefore my clients expect me to be on call 24 hours a day. However I love what I do, so it’s not a problem. If I want a bit of peace and quiet I can always step aboard a boat and go cruising the canal.”</p>

<p>Until quite recently, very few, outside of Australia would know that Maritimo is one of Australia’s most prolific builders of high performance sports cruisers. However, that name will soon be up the with the likes of Ferretti, Azimut, Sealine and Sea Ray in terms of international acclaim. Over the years, Bill Barry-Cotter has become an icon in Australia’s performance powerboat industry. When the first model from Maritimo soared above the competition and clinched the Australian Marine Industry Federation’s Cruiser of the Year and Australian Boat of the Year crowns, it should caused some astonishment. However, this was not the case when the Maritimo 60 claimed that coveted double, for the industry recognised that it had been created by a ‘Master’, none other than Bill Barry-Cotter. Bill Barry-Cotter was the man who had built the Riviera name into worldwide recognition before selling the company to a private equity enterprise. Maritimo was established in 2002 with a staff of 80 and is now operating from two modern facilities, one a purpose-built plant rated as perhaps the most modern boat building facility in Australia. Maritimo now employ more than 400 skilled craftsman and currently produces 13 models with another three on the drawing board. The Aegean Open Flybridge range feature the A50-A55-A60, while the Aegean enclosed flybridge include the A50E and A60E. The Cruising Enclosed flybridge range starts at M48-M52-M56-M60 and M72 while the Sports Cabriolet range has three models C50-C55 and C60 and coming soon will be three Sports Convertables, 470-500 and 550. It has been a six-year rollercoaster ride to success for the company, which now boasts a dealer network across Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Italy, the USA and now the UK and Spain. Barry-Cotter’s passion for powerboat racing has seen him secure seven Australian Class 1 title and in 2004 he finished third in the UIM World Class 1 Championship. Much of the development and technology used in his Riviera and latterly Maritimo raceboats is adopted the range of luxury cruisers. At the 2006 Newport International Boat Show on Rhode Island, the Maritimo 60 was judged ‘Powerboat of the Show.’ The Maritimo range includes the Maritimo 52 and the Maritimo 52 Sky Lounge and the Maritimo 550, a classic battlewagon designed specifically to hunt the giant black marlin roaming the Coral Sea and the South Pacific.<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-461" title="maritimo3" src="http://wop.wey2creative1.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/maritimo3-300x244.jpg" alt="maritimo3" width="300" height="244" /> The much travelled Barry-Cotter is very aware of the unpredictable climate of the northern hemisphere and his design team have produced a craft ideally suited for European and Scandinavian waters, the enclosed Flybridge. While there is acres of open deck space for sun worshippers, the enclosed flybridge reached by an enclosed staircase, not only provides a luxurious protected helm position, it also ensures peace of mind for parents of young children, safe in the knowledge that they can be seated within sight when the craft is underway, in much the same way as they would be when steering from the saloon. While the enclosed flybridge model has tremendous potential, Maritimo produce a range of craft to suit all climates. The United Kingdom dealership was founded in 2008 as Maritimo UK Ltd with headquarters in central Dorset and waterside facility in Poole. The company headed by James Clarke has a staff of six all with a determination to make Maritimo a leading brand in the highly competitive world of high performance luxury cruisers. Clarke has a successful import and export background and first discovered the Maritimo name on a visit to the Sydney Boat Show. “I have a young family and very conscious of the young ones’ welfare while at sea. I was taken by the enclosed flybridge as I felt that the security of being able to keep the children inside while under the way at speed was very appealing”. I met Bill Barry-Cotter at that <img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-463" title="maritimo5" src="http://wop.wey2creative1.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/maritimo5-300x231.jpg" alt="maritimo5" width="300" height="231" />show and after indicating that I would be interested in importing the Maritimo marquee into the UK, discussions got underway and we were appointed the UK dealer. While the accomodation of all the range is spacious, fuel economy is a priority on most potential buyers’ list and all Maritimos are designed as long-range cruisers boasting a considerably better efficiency in terms of fuel consumption than many of our rivals of similar size. “Although Bill describes his boats as ‘Land Rovers of the Sea’ I’d like to think they are more ‘Range Rover Vogue’s of the Sea’ as they are luxurious without being outlandish. When we decided that Maritimo had a future in the UK, the name was unknown but Bill Barry-Cotter had achieved considerable success both in his home country and the USA. One of his rivals said to me ‘if it’s Bill Barry-Cotter it will be successful, you can bet on that.’ and that inspired me with confidence.<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-460" title="maritimo2" src="http://wop.wey2creative1.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/maritimo2-300x189.jpg" alt="maritimo2" width="300" height="189" /> At the 2008 Southampton Boat Show we took delivery of our first boat, a Maritimo 48, and it attracted tremendous media and client interest, as did the Sports 50 which we unveiled at 2009 London Show” Unlike most successful boatbuilders who begin to believe in their own importance, Bill Barry-Cotter remains very down to earth and approachable. Whether Maritimo can become ‘best-sellers’ in the Northern Hemisphere remains to be seen but the enclosed flybridge model could go someway to elevating the name of Maritimo in European waters.</p>

T he Trask Brothers Racing team is based in Brisbane Australia. The all Aussie assault operates with the disadvantage of travelling vast distances to the F1 race venues in Europe and the Middle East. And to make the F1 challenge even more interesting, Bob Trask decided early on that if he was going to realise his ambition of someday becoming world champion, then it would be in a boat of his own design and one manufactured in Australia. True to his word, property developer Bob Trask has backed his bold words with significant resources to establish a state of the art F1 boat facility in Brisbane. GTR Race Boats is the brain child of Bob Trask and it is the culmination of a life time of devotion to powerboat racing. Situated in the outer northern suburbs of Brisbane is a $4 million purpose built F1 race complex as good as any in the world. GTR Race Boats has a dedicated administration block, surrounded by a factory complex that houses all facets of F1 race boat design, manufacturing, rigging and tuning. Sensibly located close to the water, Bob and David Trask are committed to testing and hit the water every week to further their development program. A tour of the GTR Race Boat factory reveals an impressive, modern complex. There are dedicated sections for each aspect of the F1 effort, ensuring each work space is pristine and free of contamination. In the area of hull design and development, Bob Trask has pioneered a number of innovations with his GTR Race Boats.<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-281" title="gtr1" src="http://wop.wey2creative1.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/gtr12-300x228.jpg" alt="gtr1" width="300" height="228" /> The construction of the deck with removable hatches ensures that the bond between hull and deck is first rate. And in the event of any gunwale bashing on the race course, repairs can be affected quickly and easily. GTR composite hulls are laid up on site in climate controlled laminating rooms. The large staff at GTR Race Boats are specialists in their individual fields. These include boat builders, adept in composite techniques, engine builders, electrical systems specialists and so on. In a sport where minute adjustments can often be the difference between gaining 1/10th of a second in lap speed, GTR is dedicated to their task. The team is currently wind tunnel testing a scale model to better understand the aerodynamics of a F1 hull. And to properly understand the development process, every tiny change and alteration is logged and tested. That way the team are able to check their library of records and ascertain the benefits of changes made not only last week, but some years ago. A tour of the GTR race shop is an enlightening experience. The full time staff each go about their assigned tasks with an assured air of confidence. There is no undue haste or urgency. This is the stuff of meticulous preparation where thorough preparation is the lowest form of acceptable work. In addition to the race boats lavishly prepared and tuned for Bob and David Trask to race on the Australian F2000 circuit. Not surprisingly Grant is already the Australian F2000 champion in his first year contesting the class. Grant is also a multiple F3 national champion and harbours a desire to join the ranks of F1 in the future. While the majority of the effort at GTR is directed at the Trask Brothers Racing team, the company also supports many others in their racing. As authorised Mercury Hi-Performance dealers and agents for a variety of other race equipment, GTR Race Boats assists drivers with full rigs, through to parts and development. “We continue to field enquiries from all parts of the world and throughout Australia about our GTR race boats and race support services,” Bob said. “GTR may not yet have the lofty profile of some, but we believe in our design and the people who are on our team. Just keep watching us.” Bob Trask began racing powerboats in Australia in the mid 1980’s. Racing boats in a variety of classes, Bob became serious when he contested the F3 circuit then moved up to the Australian F1 circuit. While learning his craft behind the wheel, Bob also stamped himself as an individual racing his self designed and built timber tunnel hulls. A multitude of titles, championship wins and major victories filled the Trask trophy cabinet. With an eye always on the big prize, Bob started to look overseas for greater racing challenges and in 2003 he competed in his first UIM F1 event. The attraction was instant. For the 2004 UIM F1 World Series, Bob Trask launched an all Australian campaign. The team fronted with their GTR Race Boats and Bob was joined by younger brother David Trask as the second driver of the two boat team. “My goal from the outset has been to win the world F1 title,” Bob said. “We are all very serious about this objective and over the past four series, the improvement has been steady and significant.” “While we may not have bothered too many drivers on the race circuit at first, we are now at the stage where other teams regard us as a serious threat. We are regularly qualifying in the top 6 shoot out and the GTR team have been up on the podium a few times.” “We have demonstrated to ourselves that we have the engines, the props, the driving ability and the race hulls to match it with the best.
