Look around any marina or boatyard in Britain and you will see a veritable armada of foreign boats afloat or laid up. Assuming they are between 2.5m and 24m, and they were imported in the UK after 1998, they will all have one thing in common, a CE mark. That is to say all these craft have complied to a stringent set of rules and regulations that were introduced in 1998. The idea was not introduced on safety grounds, but more to ensure that all boats of a certain size conform more or less to the same standards. The only exceptions are race boats, home built craft and vessels built for development. While nations outside the EU and EEA can trade among themselves without CE marks, as soon as one of these ‘outsiders’ decide to sell a boat into the UK, they have to get it thoroughly inspected in order to get a CE certificate for the boat issued. Boat builders were naturally apprehensive when the rules were first introduced and assumed it would force prices up. Inspectors armed with wads of paperwork converged on the premises whilst temperatures in workshops, batches of gel-coat, tins of resin and rolls of glassfibre were all put under the microscope. The universal standards were to embrace the entire EU, not just Britain. However, after the initial surge of inspections, boats everywhere were being produced under the new guidelines, and the issuing of CE certificates became a very straight forward procedure. Obviously there are still some issues that appear on the face of it, to be quite farcical, like a friend of ours who imported from the USA an almost new, top of the range Boston Whaler fitted with a large Mercury outboard. Because it had been produced in the US for the US market it had to have a CE certificate even though it complied with the US Coastguards strictest regulations. The owner went to the RYA and asked about getting it certificated and was told it would be in the region of £5000 to carry out the inspection. Thankfully, he was put in touch with a qualified inspector from Bristol who carried out the job for £500. A list of qualified inspectors can be obtained from the internet. L IMPORTING INTO THE UK WORLD OF POWERBOATS JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2010 29 Looking at the lower prices of new and second hand powerboats in the USA, it is very tempting to consider purchasing one from the other side of the ‘big pond’, but there are one or two factors to take into account before parting with cash. Firstly, costs of shipping from the east coast are reasonable, whereas from the west it can be 50% higher. Secondly, when the craft reaches the United Kingdom VAT has to be paid plus duty. And thirdly, as the craft will now be owned by a UK resident, it can’t get away with a visitors certificate that lasts for six months, so a CE certificate is required. If the craft is a well known make i.e. Bayliner, Wellcraft, Hustler etc. there is every chance an inspector will be able to issue a CE mark after inspecting it for a reasonable charge. However, if it’s a rare breed, the costs could be a lot higher. Importing to or from the UK from Europe and Scandinavia is a relatively straight forward exercise as, assuming it was built after 1998, it will already carry a CE mark. Therefore apart from shipping, the only other costs are VAT. If the craft was built before 1998 it will have to undergo an inspection that will add to costs. We referred earlier to a self build project not requiring a CE mark. However, if an owner builds himself a boat he has to keep it for at least five years before he can sell it. If a craft is purchased purely for racing it does not require a CE mark, but if purchased in the US it will still be eligible for VAT and duty. In a bid to reduce some of the costs involved in powerboat racing we have heard potential owners suggest they could import a racing powerboat into the Channel Islands where VAT does not apply, and transport it to the UK for races. Needless to say if they took part in six competitions, it would be more economical to pay the VAT in Britain. While not wishing to frighten off potential British buyers visiting overseas boat shows and boat yards with a view to buying a boat to use in Britain, there is every chance there is a dealer or broker in the UK selling that boat and they will organise the payment of VAT and any duty, so however appealing that bargain might seem, ideally it’s often better to look for your foreign boat in Britain.

Buying a boat in Spain:

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF KEEPING A BOAT IN SPAIN? Keeping a yacht in Spain has a number of immediate advantages most of which revolve around the weather. Having a season almost 50% longer than the UK in non tidal waters together with affordable flights taking in the region of two and a half hours allows for maximum use of a yacht. This in turn means that the service industry, especially for larger yachts, is fully geared to ensuring all services are at hand to offer a high quality service. The gathering together of services is a symbiotic relationship in that the best restaurants, designer shops, delicatessens have followed the yachtsman and more occasional services such as yacht sales, crew recruitment and guardiennage are always nearby to ensure the yacht owner is allowed to indulge at his desired level or set sail to quiet anchorages in the knowledge he has received the best service available.

ARE THERE DISADVANTAGES? Bureaucracy is a favourite to scare off the potential investor from any country, however yachting has the advantage of being allowed to work within the guidelines of the Flag country as a visitor rather than becoming tangled in the legalese of property ownership under unknown guidelines. That said it must be remembered that as a guest in the host country, laws must be adhered to and insurance, crew employment rights, safety requirements and VAT constraints are among the most important areas where advice should be sought.

ARE THERE ANY TAX ADVANTAGES OR DISADVANTAGES OF BUYING AND KEEPING A BOAT IN SPAIN AS COMPARED TO THE UK? Yacht owners travelling around the EC with a VAT paid yacht will encounter little bureaucracy however it is essential that as much proof of VAT status is maintained on the yacht in original form. Paying VAT on a UK flagged yacht can be done in Spain very easily which proved a popular option when Spain was rated 1.5% less than the UK, a situation which has reversed with the temporary VAT reduction but may revert again soon. VAT exemption is still a worthwhile status on larger yachts and professional advice should be sought to ensure your yacht is managed in such a way as to benefit from this.

IN WHAT WAY DO THE LEGAL ASPECTS OF BUYING A BOAT IN SPAIN DIFFER FROM THOSE OF THE UK? IF THERE ARE CURRENT ISSUES THAT ARE CAUSING PROBLEMS ARE THEY EXPECTED TO BE RESOLVED IN THE NEAR FUTURE? Many yacht purchasers travel to Spain to source yachts among the considerable number based there. Purchasing a yacht should be done with the help of a broker or yacht agent to ensure that the tax status of the yacht is correct and no liens are outstanding. Spain is well catered for in that many UK surveyors and brokers are based there to assist in the smooth transfer of ownership and where necessary reflagging.

ANY OTHER COMMENTS? To sum up a yacht purchaser keeping his yacht abroad should take the same care of purchase as he would when expecting a child. Can I afford it, where will it stay, can I devote the time, who will care for it… Oh yes and a name!

• Thanks to Colin McCraith of Monte Fino Yachts Europe (Palma de Majorca) for providing information on buying a boat from a Spanish perspective.

54 year old Andy Elliott will be rejoining the Qatar F1 Team when the season kicks off in May at Portimao, Portugal. Elliot will be alongside hard-charging 2008 World Champion Jay Price, a native of New Orleans. Their combined ages exceed 100 but they also boast over 80 years experience between them and team leader Price is determined to reclaim his title and if possible the Team Title. Mechanical failure almost certainly cost Jay the 2009 gold medal while Elliott’s season ended prematurely when he crashed out in spectacular fashion in St Petersburg, Russia. Price will be driving a 2009 DAC hull and Elliott will be aboard his 2008 Dragon outfit.

Sealine have released plans of their new F42 flybridge cruiser, due for launch at the 2010 Southampton Boat Show. Providing a replacement for the current F42/5, the new F42 offers unrivalled space for entertaining throughout the craft, whilst building on the practical cruising capabilities of the hugely successful F42/5.

The F42 has a significantly larger flybridge due to the extended design first offered on the F46 (launched in September). There is space for six to dine in comfort around the large dining table, plus the ability to create a large sun bed aft by simply folding down the backrest on the rear seats. There is a central double helm, two further forward facing seats, a large cool box and spacious storage locker.

The single level deck has a three part sliding door joining the cockpit to the saloon, providing excellent connectivity. In the saloon, a comfortable L shaped seating area is on the starboard side with further seating on the port side. The seating area can easily be converted into an occasional double berth. The open plan galley is located forward. The feeling of space and light is created with the large wrap around windscreen which also provides some stunning panoramic views.

In the cockpit there is an L shaped seating area with a large lazerette underneath. The cockpit is large enough for entertaining and has an optional fridge and grill to add to the enjoyment of alfresco dining. As with the F46 there are wide side decks and high pulpit rails for added safety.

There are two cabins, offering five berths as standard with the luxurious master cabin located forward. A bonded skylight above the bed provides extra light and a wonderful feeling of space. This cabin offers full length hanging storage as well as plenty of general storage capacity. The forward cabin has separate ensuite shower and toilet compartments

To provide additional space and privacy the F42 offers a second cabin amidships, that can be configured either as a triple, twin or double. The second cabin also offers an ensuite shower and separate toilet with a skylight. As with the master cabin there is full hanging space and plenty of storage. Bonded cabin windows provide extra light as well as waterside views. There will be the option to have additional storage in the mid cabin in lieu of the third berth.

The spacious interior is characterised by the hand crafted furniture used throughout which has been finished in washed walnut with solid walnut accents. The colour palette for the soft furnishings is earthy with fruit overtones.

There will be even more storage on the new F42 than on the F42/5 with the new boat building on the strengths of its forerunner. All the benefits from the F42/5 have been incorporated and expanded upon with the new design – from storage to seating areas, to large entertaining spaces in the cockpit, saloon and on the flybridge.

The new hull is based on the proven design concept developed for the SC47 and F46.

Priced at around £ 313,000 for the standard model excluding VAT when fitted with twin Volvo Penta IPS500 (740 BHP total 2 engines). The boat will also be available with twin Volvo Penta IPS600 (870 BHP total 2 engines).

Sea Ray Boats has recalled about 150 workers to two of its Knoxville-area plants following a shutdown in December. The Knoxville plant called back 90 to 95 workers, while the Tellico facility brought back 50 to 55, according to Brunswick spokesperson Dan Kubera.

Kubera said in an email that he is not aware of any more worker callbacks, and that further rehirings would depend on how market conditions develop. Brunswick CEO Dustan McCoy said he expects a slow recovery this year.

Brunswick yesterday said in its earnings release that it expects production to pick up for both its boat and motor lines to replenish dealers. The company said dealer inventory levels are at historically low levels.

For 2009, Brunswick’s sales dropped 41 per cent to US$2.78bn compared to US$4.7bn in 2008. Its net loss for 2009 was US$586.2m, compared with a net loss of US$788.1m in 2008.

But McCoy said Brunswick was positioning itself to “take advantage of market opportunities” as they evolve. “We exited 2009 with US$527m in cash, a stronger dealer network with low inventories, and a leaner company with a significantly reduced cost structure,” he said in a statement.

Sessa Marine’s SPORT FLY 54, the first-ever sport model within the “Fly Bridge” series, is a real step ahead of the game for our customers, who eagerly await for the release of the entire Fly Bridge line. Equipped with all-new features and finishings, the series will showcase a groundbreaking use of materials alongside highly innovative technology. A fusion of space, style and comfort The SPORT FLY 54’s exterior reflects the motifs of the rest of the boat-designed to be muscular in build and distinctly sporty.

Three large cabins and three living room/kitchen spaces, structured and revised to be as residential as possible, maximize the space available without sacrificing the bold shapes character of its “sport” model category. An interplay between the boat’s interior and exterior features render the SPORT FLY 54 an extremely functional one. The motor with IPS transmission not only makes the vessel safe and easily manoeuvrable , but it clears space on board. The colour scheme highlights the slender form of the model, and recalls the Sessa’s flagship model, the C68. “Life on the open sea” The fly bridge, a feature unique to the SPORT FLY 54 within its category, boasts a kitchen equipped with grill, sink and refrigerator. With seating for seven and the sliding curtains, the space becomes a true solarium: furnished, useful and as comfortable as the rest of the boat. The fly bridge truly turns the model into a vacation home with patios and lookout points that never display the same scenery twice.

The spacious master cabin at the centre of the boat is a large and luxurious suite with a breathtaking panoramic view, a private bathroom with toilet and shower, an LCD screen, a wardrobe for two, and ample shelf space. It remains up to the ship’s captain to decide how to personalize the living room. Choices are between a kitchen with a bar, or the more traditional dinette configuration. Also available are numerous additional elements such as the retractable flat-screen TV, the rollaway shades integrated into the window panes, the wine display cabinet or the bar on the upper deck of the fly bridge. Light and transparency Sessa has turned this yacht into one of the most luminous in its category, emphasizing to the extreme the relationship between the vessel and the open sea. Its enormous windows, numerous portholes and its use of materials down to the last detail are all geared at ensuring that as much light as possible be present on board. The entrance to the three cabins lower kitchen are immersed in a well of light streaming directly in from the windshield of the upper bridge. The master cabin, with its large windows and many openings to the outside, has been designed with the same goal in mind: to maximize the light’s influence within the suite. Speed and hospitality The sporty look, the liveable feel, the three cooking areas and the open spaces on the deck, the gorgeous settings and quality finishing are all virtues that are further highlighted by the high-level operations made possible by the scale of the boat’s keel and by the IPS motor system. The hydraulic bathing platform holds a 3.2-meter tender that can translate vertically to allow for boarding in a variety of conditions. This boat, both elegant and welcoming, also equipped with an enormous sailors’ cabin, will give rise to true adrenaline rushes to all aboard when reaching its speed of 37 knots. Even at maximum cruising speed, however, it maintains its easy manoeuvrability, in part due to the joystick feature to make docking or anchoring very simple. Stability and security come first for the SPORT FLY 54, yet there has been no comp romising the efficiency, comfort and luxury characteristic of the Sessa Marine philosophy.

The C38 will bring to the market the highest ratio between quality and price. A boat that makes no compromises but will be the best in terms of quality, style and design. “

Riccardo Radice Sessa C38

Milan, 18th may 2009 – Sessa Marine proudly presents their latest arrival: The C38 that will further expand their range of yachts. This project was inspired by the story of another yacht that for over ten years defined the feeling and spirit of Sessa: the C35. For eleven years this yacht was a best seller in the 10 meter category with 500 examples produced which has allowed Sessa to be recognized as a leader in the cruiser market. The research into quality and a desire for continuous improvement, both of which have always been a part of Sessa Marine, have been incorporated with the creation of this new yacht, elegant yet innovative. The linear structure and the importance of light through the large glass panelling, characteristics that define Sessa’s unique C68, can also be found in the C38 and also in all future projects. One of the key points of this yacht is the optimization of the internal space allowing it to have one of the biggest bathrooms in its class as well as an independent owner’s cabin and an aft cabin with two separate beds that can be made into a large double. A key innovative design feature of this yacht is the large number of windows and portholes that help to reduce the structural barriers and allow one to get closer to the ocean. Another unique element are the two kitchens, an internal one designed by a famous Italian kitchen designer and another external one, found in the cockpit, with minibar, counter and stove. Like her larger sisters, the C 38 will also be equipped with a modern electrically opening Hard Top to ensure the highest degree of comfort when cruising. A large swim platform at the stern where one can stow a larger than normal tender, dedicated tanning zones, chaise lounges, sofas and an automobile styled helm station are only some of the details that make this yacht unique. The yacht will be presented during the Cannes boat show and available with a 300 HP inboard/outboard D4 engine with the option of a joystick control to facilitate manoeuvring while docking. She will be available in either bronze, navy blue, squid black, or white.

MAIN TECNICAL DETAILS:

Length overall, LOA = 11.70 m

Beam, B = 3.80 m

Princess Yachts International plc launches the first images of the new M Class yachts. Beautifully detailed, scale models of both the 32M and the 40M yachts will be publically revealed for the first time at the London Show together with the very first images of both models – an unveiling that has been eagerly awaited since the Company announced plans to move into the 100 feet plus category last Spring. The M Class yachts will be built at the recently acquired South Yard facility, just a short distance along the waterfront from the Princess Head Quarters where production of the very first vessel, the 32M, is already well underway. Her vast, resin infused hull was completed in early December and floated ceremoniously across to the new Shipyard from Newport Street and now the fit out of the largest Princess to date has begun – her completion scheduled for later in 2010.

Whilst the hull was in the moulding shop, the M Class design team has been inside the huge South Yard facility constructing a complete, full-size and detailed mock-up of the yacht’s interior which has been used to trial many different design, finishes and detailing ideas for what will be the most sumptuous Princess interior yet. It’s an indication of the sheer size of the Princess South Yard facility that the 32M hull easily fits alongside this life-size mock-up and in February, the Princess 95 Motor Yacht production team will also move to the South Yard facility, where they will build 95 Motor Yachts, two at a time, alongside the 32M. These impressive new craft will be unmistakably Princess in terms of design and performance, while offering exceptional levels of personalisation so each will be truly individual. Extremely spacious, the 32M provides accommodation for up to 10 guests and can be configured with either three or four en-suite staterooms for guests in addition to the owners suite which takes pride of place on the main deck. The 40M, a long-range Tri-deck cruising yacht, is scheduled for launch late in 2011 and she offers an unprecedented level of luxury and personalisation. Eminently capable of accommodating 12 guests she also provides separate accommodation for up to 8 crew to ensure complete privacy. The owner is accommodated in a magnificent suite on the main deck while throughout the yacht there is an incredible amount of scope for personalisation ensuring she is a very worthy flagship for the Princess fleet.

Zodiac’s much celebrated new cabin RIB, N-ZO has won its category in the IPC magazines Motor Boat of the Year Awards at a spectacular marine industry event held at the Langham Hotel in London. The 7-metre, luxury 2-berth cabin RIB won the RIB and Sportsboat category having impressed the judging panel with its progressive design and affordability.

On presenting the award, the editor of Motor Boats Monthly Magazine and Motor Boat of the Year Awards judge, Carl Richardson said, “Zodiac’s N-ZO opens up a boating genre to a completely new set of buyers and wowed the judges with a refreshingly new and sophisticated take on sportsboating.”

UK Managing Director of Zodiac Marine & Pool, Alan Morgan commented, “This is a superb start to the year for us and we are delighted that Zodiac’s new flagship model has been recognised by the ‘who’s who’ of British motorboat journalism. We are very excited by the introduction of our first cabin RIB, which has been extremely well received in its first year of production and we look forward to further success with the introduction of our 2010 model.”

First launched in the UK in 2009, the latest version of Zodiac’s N-ZO is currently being shown at this year’s Tullet Prebon London International Boat Show. Having undergone a number of performance improvements following valued feedback, the 2010 model is even faster thanks to an increase in engine capacity and reduction in weight.

N-ZO is Zodiac’s first high performance cabin RIB and has been designed in collaboration with renowned Italian designer, Vittorio Garroni. It combines Zodiac’s boat-building expertise and Garroni’s pure lines resulting in the most sophisticated craft to be produced from the Zodiac factory to date.
